Trainz is a railway simulator for the PC from Auran software. Not only can you 'drive' trains around a virtual environment, but you can also design your own virtual world to run them in. You can run to strict timetables if you want and it includes a supply & demand simulator for different industries so, for example, you have to make sure that enough coal is collected from a coal mine & delivered to a power station to enable it to produce electricity. It even includes a daytime/weather simulation too! There is a large community of creators making everything from rolling stock to scenery for you to download for your railway, and a forum in case you need help or advice.

You may have noticed that significant words ending with the letter 's' get changed to a 'z'. It seems to be the done thing wherever Trainz is concerned, so why not...

Trainz Downloadz

Here is a list of the content I have produced for Trainz, which can be downloaded from here or via the Trainz Download Station.

1km Basemap Pack:

  • 1km Square Basemap for 'tracing' contours, roads etc. over. Copy a scan of your map over '1km square X.jpg' and restart Trainz. When 'tracing' complete, delete the basemap object. The pack consists of 9 individual basemaps, so all 8 squares around the one you're working on can be seen.
  • 1km Square Basemap map scans must be 1024x1024 resolution and either tga, bmp or jpg image files.
  • NOTE: Depending on the scale of your baseboards, this 1km square will probably be larger than 1 board.
  • (This Basemap is based on the 720m x 720m Basemap by 'weevil' - Stuart Thurstan. I found it easier to work from maps using 1km grid squares, rather than having to chop up map images in 720m square chunks!)

Utilities:

TrainzObjectz - a very useful utility for checking almost anything that could be wrong in a Trainz config file

Trainz Object Explorer is a standalone utility capable of examining Trainz models. Features hardware-accelerated OpenGL preview and detailed information on loaded objects.

Asset Seeker/Manager - ASM takes the guesswork out of managing your dependant files. Whether it is content for your Maps, Scenarios, or Traincars, ASM can get it for you.

Trainz has a limitation of one savepoint. This utility which automates the process of creating mltuiple backup directories as much as possible.

TrainzMap is stand-alone utility for: inspecting Trainz routes; generating route maps either on paper or as bitmap files; editing some of the properties of the objects and of tracks; measuring distances along tracks.
